Zeehonden tellingen WZ Trilateraal WMR
Sinds de jaren ‘60 van de vorige eeuw telt Wageningen Marien Research (WMR) de gewone zeehonden op de zandbanken in de Nederlandse Waddenzee. Dat gebeurt in opdracht van het ministerie van LVVN. Tijdens een telling wordt met een vliegtuig het hele Nederlandse waddengebied afgevlogen van Den Helder tot in de Dollard. Alle bekende plekken waar zeehonden tijdens laagwater op de zandbanken liggen worden bezocht. Omdat er wordt gevlogen op minstens 500 voet (ruim 150 meter) zijn de zeehonden goed te zien. Vroeger, toen er erg weinig zeehonden in de Waddenzee leefden, werden de aantallen tijdens de vlucht genoteerd. Maar met de groei van de populatie is geleidelijk overgegaan naar digitale fotografie. De opnames worden later op het instituut geanalyseerd en uitgewerkt. De GPS-locaties* worden tijdens de vlucht ook geregistreerd. Zo ontstaat er tevens een beeld van de verspreiding van de zeehonden over de verschillende gebieden in de Waddenzee. Data is bijgewerkt tot 2024.
